13 09/2011Damien Buckley Changes to Google Maps Embed Code

Google Maps is a great free service, providing all manner of options for viewing and embedding maps on your website. As such, we’ve embedded many maps, custom and standard into client websites to help their clients find them easily.

Colorbox-embedded Google Map I found an issue yesterday with a couple of Google Maps which had been embedded using Colorbox. Using Colorbox allows Google Maps to be opened in a modal window without leaving the website you are on. Where the maps had been displaying previously, suddenly all that appeared was a blank page…

Not Great…Blank Google Map Embed

The issue seems to be restricted only to this manner of implementation. Maps embedded on a page using standard iframe code continued to work.

The problem has arisen where Google has made a minor change to its map links, adding ‘&output=embed’ to the end of the link.

Its a simple fix – just add this to the end of the link string – but it seems a little careless of Google, who surely must understand that millions of websites are using their code – this being the link previously generated by Google Maps. Surely, allowing the legacy code to continue to work should be no big deal?

Either way, if you have this type of Google Maps implementation on your website and have found its stopped working, simply add the code as above. I’ve updated code on websites we’ve produced but if you notice a problem with yours, please let me know.
