In a few short years Google has gone from a garage to one of the world’s largest and most influential companies. Its hard to think of the web today without thinking of Google and how to achieve high search ranks is generally one of the first questions we’re asked when clients are looking to invest in a website.
In contrast to some other software companies we could mention Google has maintained an extremely customer focused strategy and offers a whole host of free tools to webmasters and web users in general.
What we’re going to focus on today are Google Sitemaps and Analytics. Google Sitemaps have been around for a while now and are a valuable addition to every website while Analytics is a relatively new and extremely worthwhile offering.
Google Sitemaps give you Google’s view of your website allowing you or your webmaster to diagnose potential problems. Sitemaps let you see how Google crawls and indexes your site and alert you to any problems Google may have indexing your site.
Sitemaps also show how your site is performing by learning which search queries drive traffic to your site and how users arrive there whilst sharing info with Google about your sites pages: which are most important and how often they change – helping Google to crawl your site more effectively.
In order to get up and running with Google Sitemaps, a trackable page or code is added to your website containing an XML map of your website. Once this is done, a webmaster account is established with Google where you notify them that you have a sitemap available.
bq.The huge advantage here is that rather than waiting around for Google to find and index your website which in some cases can take weeks or even months, you are effectively pushing the content to Google, providing a clear and concise directory of what site content is to be indexed.
‘Google Analytics tells you everything you want to know about how your visitors found you and how they interact with your site. You’ll be able to focus your marketing resources on campaigns and initiatives that deliver ROI, and improve your site to convert more visitors.’
Google Analytics provides an astounding array of site metrics, from simple marketing statistics such as number of visits, where your visitors were referred from and which / how many pages of your site they visited right through to the more serious end of town more specifically targeted at webmasters such as your visitors’ operating system, browser type and version and even their screen resolution.
Whether you’re looking for basic information on how your site is performing or more in depth site metrics to direct your design and marketing efforts, Google Analytics provides all the information.
Although both sitemaps and analytics are free from Google you will need the necessary accounts set up and the code installed on your website to get them working.
