Improved linking practice

25 February 2009

Whilst ‘click-here’ and ‘more >>’ may be fairly obvious to most web users, its’ certainly not best practice. It can be difficult to avoid employing these link shortcuts when using a content management system, particularly where e-commerce is concerned and you’re trying to make life more straightforward for the person posting articles or products.

When training clients to use content management systems we strongly recommend they try to make their links more relevant – its not always easy but with a bit of thought, it can be achieved and in addition to improving the accessibility of your site to those using screen readers etc, you may receive a search optimisation dividend too.

Andrew Tetlaw at Sitepoint has some solutions for more effective hyperlinking and is well worth a read for any of our clients writing up news or other articles on their websites.
