Brown is the new Black
We hope you enjoy our newly designed e-newsletter with a 'good enough to eat' mint and chocolate colour scheme!
As a design company, we try to keep things fresh and produce new designs every so often to inspire our clients and demonstrate how versatile a web site or e-newsletter can be.
We recommend our clients keep their marketing materials fresh too, as it's one of the best ways to keep your customers' attention and interest in what you've got to offer.
Some people worry that trying something new will dilute their existing brand. This is a valid concern and is an important consideration when undertaking a re-design or refresh of marketing materials.
The key is to ensure that the new style doesn’t work in conflict with your brand. The updated marketing concept should work to reinforce your brand and message, building on the positive associations your existing clients already have whilst aiming to attract more potential clients with your exciting new design.
So, don't be afraid - try something new!
Cool Designs
We recently designed a new logo for one of our clients, “The logo is so cool – how did you come up with the design?” they asked. After some blushing and murmuring of ‘gee, shucks’ we started to think about the answer…
Graphic Design is a visual way to communicate your message, so creating ‘cool designs’ involves much more then merely making something look good. Whilst aesthetics certainly play a significant part in the design or the visual message, we believe that it should play the supporting role, not the main one.
Graphic Design for effective communication involves a fair degree of conceptual problem-solving and critical thinking. We start by asking the question:
“What is the primary function of this design, what's the foundation upon which to build the rest of the design, what motivating factor lies at the core.”
Often, the primary function of a design is to sell a product or service. The key then, as a designer, is to determine who we are trying to sell to i.e. Target Audience. This is sometimes a difficult concept to grasp. It is not necessarily what "I/we like" which determines the direction of the design but rather "who needs to like that?"
Once we have an idea of who it is that needs to like (and be motivated to buy), the product or service, we research this group of people to formulate ideas on what type of messages they will respond to. Armed with this information we develop our concepts with a three-tier mission in mind:
- To succinctly capture our clients message and image
- To ensure this message appeals to it’s target audience
- To look cool while doing all of the above!
Keeping your Web under control
Almost every client we speak to about websites these days asks the same question, “How can we manage our website ourselves?”
With the benefit of increasingly advanced software, updating and controlling your own site is now easier than ever. From web-based content management systems (CMS) to 'what you see is what you get' software like Contribute, there are numerous ways to edit and maintain your web pages in-house.
Here at Propeller, we're big fans of Contribute due to its ease of use. With some careful thought given to the site design, using Contribute can be as easy (if not easier), than using Microsoft Word - allowing direct on the page editing of text and graphics - even the ability to drag and drop Word documents right into the web page.
There are many benefits to maintaining your own website and as such this should be an integral part of your site planning considerations.
Regular site updates will also pay dividends with fresh, regularly updated content considered amongst the most important criteria for achieving improved search engine rankings.
Of course not everyone has the time nor the interest in working on their own website and in these instances it is important to discuss and agree upon a maintenance schedule with your website developer - preferably as part of the site development strategy - preventing any nasty surprises down the track.
If you would like to see the Contribute program in action, or require any information on planning a web site, contact us.
