Propeller have the great privilege to work with some great businesses, from start-ups and SME’s through to charitable and governmental agencies. Although we include all of our clients in our portfolio and news, lately we’ve heard such great success stories that we decided it was time we dedicated a category to it.
From now and into the future, we’ll be bringing you regular articles about how our clients’ have developed their businesses and how Propeller’s services and strategies have helped along the way.

We’ll get the ball rolling today with Productive Gardens.
Productive Gardens are Queensland’s Edible Garden Specialists, offering urban dwellers easy, fresh and convenient solutions to growing organic produce in their own homes. Using a variety of innovative, water-efficient and space-saving systems, founder David Borthwick has created a one-stop-shop for everything needed to grow an abundance of delicious produce—no matter how small your garden or how high your balcony may be.
Specialising in ready-to-go, low-maintenance Mini Edible Gardens fully-planted with your choice of plants, flowers, herbs or vegetables, Productive Gardens make it possible for anyone to enjoy the benefits of growing your own fresh, organic produce with minimum fuss. Founded in 2004, Productive Gardens is proudly Queensland-owned and operated. Home delivery is available across the greater Brisbane area, with shipping available throughout Australia.
Propellers’ association with Productive Gardens goes back to 2005 with a logo design and marketing package including business cards and a tri-fold DL brochure to get things up and running. This was followed up with a basic one page website, allowing PG to dip their toes in and see if the web could benefit them.
With enquiries growing and a healthy search rank proving that even a single page site could work for them, PG returned to Propeller in 2007 to take their web presence to the next level. The initial website was designed with future development in mind, allowing us to keep the familiar theme and branding. The site was ported to the Shopify hosted e-commerce platform providing a stable, secure and flexible environment for the store to grow.
We also built in a blogging system to keep PG’s visitors up to date with new products and David’s appearances at local markets and shows. We then integrated a custom designed email newsletter and provided the option for site visitors to subscribe and also to view previous newsletters they may have missed.
Since launching in March, PG’s has grown from approx. 70 visits per day to an average of 400 visits per day and a peak of over 1600 visits in one day following a feature in Brisbane’s Courier Mail.
David had this to say;
“Establishing a Shopify online store has enabled us to promote our products to the widest possible audience, where a physical shop would struggle to achieve penetration. After only a few months, our sales are increasing and becoming more regular, it still amazes me when we receive orders from the other side of the country. The analytics facilities provide good reports of visitors to the site and what the interest is in and combined with our e-newsletter, powerful targeted promotion.
It’s always nice to receive compliments regarding our service but I have to say the Shopify order notification makes it easy to get orders dispatched accurately and quickly.”
Here’s what a couple of David’s customers had to say about their experience shopping with Productive Gardens;
“Congratulations on a fabulous business. It seems that every brilliant garden idea I’ve ever found is on your site (and it’s difficult finding them, being an urban container gardener with only concrete to grow on)- plus a few that are new to me. I look forward to seeing what you come up with next.” Jacqueline, Sydney
“Hi David, I did receive it today. Thanks a million. Your service is second to none Cheers,” Ben, Springwood
David on working with Propeller;
“Propeller embarked on our project to develop an e-commerce site with enthusiasm and cutting edge technical know how. Right from the start we were talked through the options for setting up an online shop that would meet our needs now and well into the future. After sales service has also been fantastic with Propeller always obliging to make adjustments and helping us navigate the site.
Sales have increased by 15% in the few short months since the shop has been operational. Many of these have been from interstate and ones we wouldn’t have got otherwise.”
Its really gratifying for us to see Productive Gardens going from strength to strength and although we don’t take credit for their success, its nice to know we were able to help in some small way.
If you’ve worked with Propeller and have a great success story to tell about your business, email it through to us. All submissions will be judged on merit and we’re looking for marketing-focused tales which we can share with our client base so we can all learn from it.
