Craft CMS has increase in popularity and been adopted by brands like Mercedes, Nike, Citibank, Sonos, Grill'd, and Netflix. Propeller have been building websites with Craft since 2018.

With time however comes progress, and with progress come updates. Craft 4 was launched in May 2022 and the end-of-life dates for Craft 3 announced. Updating your Craft CMS website from 3 to 4 now will ensure that you can not only take advantage of the many wonderful improvements the Craft team have introduced, but also that you are staying on top of security and stability fixes.

Craft 3 end-of-life

With Craft 4 available, continuing to maintain old software doesn’t make sense so beginning May 2023 Craft 3 will no longer be maintained.

From Craft

Craft 3 bug fixes will be supported through April 30, 2023. After April 30, 2023 Craft will no longer fix issues that creep into the software.
Important Craft 3 security fixes will be supported through April 30, 2024. After April 30, 2024 Craft will no longer address security issues that creep into the software.

New features and benefits of Craft 4

Craft 4 includes many new features. In addition to increased security, below are some of our favorite features that both content editors and website owners love.

Performance. 

Draft and revision creation are now substantially faster, especially for multi-site installs and complex content models with Matrix, Neo, and Super Table blocks nested within each other.

Accessibility. 

We’ve drastically improved authoring accessibility, particularly for people using assistive technologies like screen readers.

Conditional fields. 

Field layout elements and tabs can now be configured to only be visible/editable when certain conditions are met, based on the element being edited, as well as the logged-in user.

New element editor slideouts. 

Element editor slideouts now support provisional drafts and autosaving, just like Edit Entry pages.

Easier focal point adjustments. 

It’s now possible to edit images’ focal points from their preview modals, in addition to within the Image Editor.

Craft Plugin updates

As far as we are aware, all of the plugins we employ in our Craft builds are ready for use in Craft 4 but if you want to make sure, you can check this in the Craft control panel under Utilities > Craft 4 Upgrade, or just drop us a line and we'll check for you.

Updating from Craft CMS 3 to 4

If you are on a hosting and maintenance plan with Propeller, just relax - there's a chance your website has already been ugraded to Craft 4 and if not it soon will be.

If you are not on a hosting and maintenance plan, you probably should be so you can relax and drink a cocktail while we take care of things like everyone else  In lieu of this, Propeller can upgrade your website fro your current version to the latest version of Craft 4. Just give us a call to arrange the upgrade.
