Great article from Andy Rutledge on RFP’s

Andy Rutledge has written a great article – The Trouble with RFP’s in which he points out the shortcomings of submitting to RFP’s for freelancers and other web professionals. The article is written mainly for people looking to hire web professionals and is an excellent read not only in that it explains the shortcomings of hiring by RFP but also offers some sound advice on finding and hiring the right people for your job.

Speed up your site with CSS Sprites

CSS Sprites are nothing new so I’m not going to reinvent the wheel – rather I’m going to explain how we’ve employed them in the new propellerglobal.com to reduce HTTP requests, decrease total image file-sizes and limit the overall page weight. All combined these small improvements dramatically reduce the time it takes a browser to download and render the page.

Design and Loading Times Key in Website Success

A recent Webcopyplus online poll has revealed that almost 25% of web users surveyed indicated “poor visual presentation” along with 50.9% of users indicating “slow load times” were the main reasons to abandon a website. “Weak web copy” sat alongside design as a major factor.

Propeller Win the 2008 McFarlane Prize for Excellence in Australian Web Design

Having been shortlisted for the McFarlane Prize for the second year running, Propeller packed up and headed to Sydney for Web Directions South 2008.

WDS08 was well attended and featured a stellar cast of the net’s finest with over 30 sessions hosted by international speakers such as Jina Bolton, Jeffrey Veen, August de los Reyes, Jeff Croft and Cameron Adams amongst others. WDS08 was sponsored by Microsoft, Adobe, the W3C, Xero, Gruden, 99 Designs, Sitepoint, Molten, Wacom and Opera.

Following a fascinating insight into Microsofts’ new ‘surface’ technology by August de los Reyes, conference organisers John Allsopp and Maxine Sherrin presented this years' McFarlane Prize
